About 'Go'

‘Go’, or Weiqi, is an international mind sport. It is the world's oldest, continuously played strategy game.

A 19x19 'Go' board has more game variations than atoms in the known universe. While the rules are simple, the level of gameplay depends on a player’s skill. Players are ranked on a 46-point scale, similar to that used for other East Asian martial arts.

Weiqi (Mandarin for ‘board game of surrounding’) originated in China around 4000 years ago. The West first heard of Weiqi through Japan. It is familiar to most people by its Japanese name ‘Go‘. It is played with black and white pieces. All pieces are identical. The objective of the game is to surround the opponent's pieces and capture more territory – a balance between attack and defence.
